Research Fellow in Structural Health Monitoring using Fibre Optic Sensors

We are looking for a dedicated and innovative Research Fellow to join Kingston University on an exciting collaborative, funded research project focused on Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) of bridge structures. The project involves the deployment of optical fibre sensor technologies for real-time evaluation of bridge integrity and performance. You will work closely with academic and industry partners to implement advanced sensing methods and analyse data collected from these systems. 

Your key responsibilities include designing, executing, and delivering research outcomes as well as contributing to the design of future research developments. You will be involved in preparing and disseminating research results through co-authored publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at academic conferences. Effective coordination and organisation of both individual and collaborative efforts will be essential to ensure alignment and integration of work across the broader research team. The post holder will undertake field work and occasionally travel to the survey site.

The Person

We are seeking a highly skilled and knowledgeable individual with a PhD in Civil & Structural Engineering, Non-Destructive Testing (NDT), Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Optical Sensing, Physics or a relevant discipline. The successful candidate will have a proven ability to design, manage, and undertake research projects with a strong commitment to research integrity. 

You should have experience working within sensors for bridges and similar structures. Essential skills include managing and analysing quantitative data from Non-Destructive Testing methods, Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) or similar, using software tools such as MATLAB and Python amongst others. Prior hands-on experience in optical fibres, Fibre Bragg Grating (FBG) sensors and accelerometers is desirable. 

The ideal candidate will bring a blend of theoretical knowledge, practical research experience and data analysis proficiencies to this vital role, helping the successful delivery of this collaborative project. The post holder will be motivated, a strong analytical thinker and problem-solver, and a strong team player with the ability to work independently.

Due to the urgency of the project, it is deemed necessary to give priority to applications from candidates based in the UK and EU.
